Francisco Nieva is one of the essential luminaries on the Spanish and indeed universal theatrical and cultural scene. Throughout his extensive artistic career, he won the most prestigious awards in the world of literature: twice winner of the National Theatre Award, winner of the National Award for Dramatic Literature and of the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature, among many other accolades.
Between 1978 and 1980, Nieva produced what he himself called “The Romantic Notebook”, an impressive artist's book, filled with his own drawings and manuscripts in which the genius gave free rein to his creative explosiveness.
The production of this notebook coincided in time with a period in which Nieva staged some of his most outstanding works. Works for which on numerous occasions he was not only the playwright and director, but also the set and costume designer: Delirium of Hostile Love (Delirio de amor hostil), The Baths of Algiers (Los baños de Argel), Mrs. Tártara (La señora Tártara) and The Hung Lightning Bolt (El rayo colgado) among others.
It is understandable, therefore, that the creation of this "Romantic Notebook" provided him with a poetic and unfettered refuge from his thoughts and passions. Here we find astonishing, perverse and furious beings, or devices endowed with a certain degree of humanity framed in architectures that are only possible in the realm of dreams.
The exhibition Theatre of the Private Horror brings together 55 enlarged reproductions from Francisco Nieva’s “Romantic Notebook”. It will also feature five oil paintings by his assistant, and audiovisual images that will serve, in short, to bring us closer to one of our greatest theatrical geniuses of all time.
Step right up! Francisco Nieva awaits you.
NOTE: The exhibition will remain closed on December 20th from 4pm to 6pm.
